Lost Data - Hard Drive Repair

I really need this data back - what should I do?

Call us if you just need advice. Start by reading the guide below and if you need advice, just give us a call. If you accept our quote, package the drive or disk securely (lots of bubble wrap) and send it by special delivery. If we get your drive early enough, you stand a very good chance of salvaging your data. We can even recover data from a formatted or virus infected disk.

Do not attempt to open the drive or continue to run it as you may make the data unrecoverable. We can recover failed drives in 90% of cases.

Please fill out our enquiry form or our instant quote form.

General Guide To Data Recovery and failed drives and disks

Do you recover data from laptops, Zip Disk, PC drives, Mobile Phones, floppy discs and CDs?

Yes, although it depends on the physical condition in each case. We have recovered data from fire damaged drives and can even data from mobile phones, memory sticks, Mac drives, and on occasion, 5 1/4 discs!

How long will it take?

It can take a LONG time to recover data sometimes. Whilst we can take on emergency recoveries, we cannot guarantee to retrieve the data quickly. You need to allow seven days (unless emergency). Much depends on the actual physical condition of the drive or disc. We've had some cases where it has taken up to six days to pull off just a few hundred megabytes of data - so whilst we try to recover files as quickly as we can, we cannot guarantee a fast recovery. Even if the data you require only amounts to a few files, we have to recover the WHOLE disk or drive first. This is why drive size is the guiding factor when it comes to pricing.

What is your pricing structure?

No two recoveries are ever the same and they all bring their own problems to bear. However, we provide an instant quote for most scenarios.

Should I open my hard drive?

Categorically - NO! Do not do this! NEVER open a failed or failing hard drive case under ANY circumstances. There is nothing you can repair and drives should ONLY be opened in a totally dust free environment by a specialist technician. If you do open your drive - DON'T send it to us. We will not entertain recoveries on drives that show signs of being opened!

DO NOT fdisk, reformat, continually restart the machine or allow XP to 'repair' the disk as this may render the data totally unrecoverable. If we get the drive early, there is a high chance we can recover it.

My drive is making strange noises

Severly damaged drives (ie clicking or grating sounds) or ones that will not even 'spin' up can usually be recovered but will have to be opened in our laboratory which includes a purpose built clean room. This kind of work adds significantly to the time (and expertise) involved. Please use our INSTANT QUOTE. Generally speaking, even if the drive is not seen in Bios or not recognisable in Windows, we can extract your data for you.

Can you recover data from a formatted drive?

In all likelihood - yes.

Can you recover deleted files?

In most cases yes, although individual files can sometime require further recovery work if they are corrupted.

Can you recover confidential files - ie using forensics techniques?

Yes we can. Firstly we can only carry out such intensive work on request and it would have to comply with the Data Protection Act. However, as far as forensic work is concerned, we can recover all kinds of hidden/deleted files and are experienced in detecting information not accessible to the normal user.

Pornography

Realistically, many drives (anything up to 80% of drives) contain pornography but it does not necessarily follow that the contents are in fact illegal or even been obtained with the knowledge of the user. It is not our role to make judgements on this kind of material. It can often be the case that images end up on hard drives as a direct result of pop-ups without any intervention from the user. If however, we felt the contents of a drive had serious implications for UK Security (eg terrorist activity), or contained a substantial amount of child pornography images, we would have no hesitation but to inform the police. There is no hard or fast rule about this, but (other than in exceptional cases as just mentioned), we are not interested if a drive contains pornography or not, except where an organisation is trying to ascertain whether an employee has been accessing porn sites - but that is an entirely different issue anyway.

Do you guarantee to recover all files?

No. We can only recover that which is recoverable.

I get an 'Invalid System Disk' message when I try to boot into windows

Hmmm, annoying but we can get your data back for you.

I get as far as the Windows login screen then my PC reboots.

This is probably a driver problem. Try rebooting in safe mode and see where the computer grinds to a halt. Have you installed anything new recently? There are numerous websites that can give solutions for this type of thing but beyond the scope of a page like this. If you are unsure call us.

BIOS does not recognise my drive

We can probably get your data back for you but we would need to see the drive first.

Can you recover data from every drive?

Realistically - no. However, we've recovered data from drives in fires, sitting in water and scenarios where you would not think it possible to recover data.

Can you recover mailboxes (PST OST files) from Microsoft Exchange Server? Our Mail Server crashed and we can't access the database.

Yes we can. PST files are somewhat fragile, particularly when they're big files but we have a very high success rate. Please ring us if you need help with a PST file.

How do I get the drive to you?

We don't accept hand delivery simply because we have so many service calls and cannot guarantee that someone will be available to accept the drive. Use Special Delivery or a Courier service, with masses of bubble wrap to protect the drive. Also, write down the model number and serial numbers printed on your drive and keep a record of these. Also include these, a summary of the fault and your return address.

We DO NOT offer a 'While-U-Wait' service. All recoveries have to be sheduled and go through a number of processes before we can begin a full recovery including analysis, virus checking and a spares check. We can prioritise work but please ask for a quote for this. A surcharge is applicable on emergency recoveries. Bear in mind that ALL data recoveries are emergencies by their very nature and we have to justify putting one job before another.

We also do NOT provide a free testing service. We do not charge for analysis of a drive except where a drive/disk is deemed by us to be recoverable and you then decide not to have the data recovered, you are laiable to an examination fee. to cover wasted time and costs.

How will you return my data to me?

By special delivery on CD, DVD or a brand new or second-hand hard drive, whichever suits you. We can supply all three at no or reasonable cost and always have them in stock.

PLEASE COMPLETE OUR CONTACT FORM

We need hardly point out that regular data backup is essential. Try to move crucial data to a less corruptable media such as DVD or CDR. Its considerably cheaper than trying to retrieve lost data later on.
